Fake jobs: careers-canada.com

One fake job domain today, and the scammers seem to have shifted to a new target - Canada. This time, the domain is careers-canada.com, registered only yesterday to the fictitious "Alexey Kernel" in the Ukraine.

The standard approach with these scammers is to spoof an email "from" the target's email address (don't worry if you see this, your email account has not been compromised) and the emails offer a variety of illegal jobs including money laundering. It forms part of this long-running scam.

If you have any examples of emails using this domain, please consider sharing them in the Comments.. thanks!

I have received 10 of these in the last 48 hours. Any suggestions on how to stop them?

Conrad Longmore said...

Stopping them depends on your mail configuration, and everything is different. But if it is like previous spam runs, the mail is faked to look like it comes "from" you. If you scan your mail at the perimeter, then you should be able to block all spam mail messages like this with a configuration change, else make sure that you don't whitelist your own email address in whatever system you use.

I have received 6 of these e-mails in the past two days on one account that I have. They are very annoying and I can not figure out how to block them.

I got the same message this morning. I wonder if writing back to this scumbag and telling his to go f@#% himself is a waste of breath?

Hi! I am receiving about 10 a day. They look like I sent them to myself. Conrad, can you give me more details on how not to whitelist my own email address. Thanks!

Conrad Longmore said...

Tania, it's very dependent on your mail system and spam filtering. If you have a seperate spam filter (e.g. MessageLabs, Postini) then check the whitelist / approved senders lists. There's also a similar list buried in Outlook somewhere. I'm afraid that I can't give a specific "how to"..

40 careers-canada.com emails in 7 days (3 different email addresses). They are sending to an email that hasn't been on the web for over a year now so they must be using a database of cached addresses.
