Fake job domains 19/6/111

A whole batch of domains advertising fake jobs today (mostly money mule operations). These were are registered two days ago to the fictitious "Leonid Pravduk" registrant that we have seen recently, and form part of the very long running "Lapatasker" series of scam domains.

europe-hire.net
green-westeurope.com
hosting-europ.com
newgreen-europ.com
traffic-europ.com
us-totaljob.com
usa-totaljob.com

Avoid these, basically.. but if you do have a sample email, feel free to share it in the comments.

What's even more upsetting is that they are using MY email to send these out. How do they do that?

This is all about money laundering. If you respond and they deem you are a real victim, they will wire money through your bank account, have you open new accounts, and so on. It's just a way to keep the authorities behind as they move around funds from illegal activities.

Also, after my 4th report about their domain to mx.yandex.ru, they gave up and moved their mail hosting to gmail.com. Kind of funny that gmail doesn't care about criminal mailboxes when Yandex did.

If you see a new domain (and you will, they change weekly) you should report it immediately to their mail server's provider.

I have been getting these as well. The appear to come from my or any other email address we have on our domain. They are using an emulator to make it appear to come from ourselves. I don't believe they are sending email to anyone using our address.

I have been looking for work and was so excited this morning when I got this email, because it looked so real. I thought it was in response to a job I had applied for. It was the Global Youth Exchange letter paying $16.50 per hour.

How do we stop these people from preying on people who are seeking legitimate employment?

Thanks for your blog, otherwise I may have taken the bait.

Fernweher said...

These job emails do not look legitimate in any way. A real job offer will not have spelling and grammar errors in the message.

These emails do not seem to ask for financial or personal information, that is another way to spot a scam. I wonder what benefit they get from people sending in their resumes? Regardless, beware of any job offer that seems "to good to be true."

If you are getting spam email "from" yourself, then it might be a configuration problem with your spam filter. Make sure that you are not whitelisting your own domain or email address, your mail admin should be able to help.
